June 20, 2025

Clause 58–Compliant Hearing Tests, Delivered On Site

At The Audiology Place, we bring the clinic to you. Our mobile audiometric testing service provides on-site, Clause 58–compliant hearing assessments for noise-exposed workers, helping you meet your WHS obligations while minimising disruption.

Led by Dr Signe Steers, an experienced, fully accredited Audiologist, we offer a professional, turnkey solution – from scheduling and attendance, through to testing, reporting and record-keeping support.

Why Mobile Audiometric Testing?

Under Clause 58 of the NSW WHS Regulation, businesses must provide audiometric testing for workers who are required to wear hearing protection because of hazardous noise levels. Our mobile service helps you:

  • Establish and update baseline hearing records for noise-exposed workers

  • Demonstrate due diligence and support your WHS compliance

  • Detect potential noise-induced hearing changes early, before they become disabling

  • Reduce time away from site by testing staff where they work

We currently service businesses across Sydney (including the Northern Beaches and surrounding areas) and can discuss regional or multi-site programs on request.

What Our Mobile Audiometric Service Includes

For each participating worker, The Audiology Place provides a full Clause 58–aligned audiometric assessment, including:

Comprehensive hearing testing

We perform a full audiogram tailored to occupational noise exposure:

  • Pure tone air conduction and bone conduction testing across the key frequencies affected by workplace noise

  • Testing conducted by or under the supervision of Dr Signe Steers, a fully accredited Audiologist (Audiology Australia and Independent Audiologists Australia)

Otoscopy (ear health check)

Before testing, we carry out a visual ear examination to check for:

  • Excessive or impacted ear wax

  • Outer ear or eardrum concerns that may affect test results

If an ear is not in a testable condition, we will not proceed with an audiogram that would produce invalid or misleading results.

Clinical interpretation and categorisation

Each result is professionally interpreted, with:

  • Identification of potential noise-induced changes in hearing

  • Comments on any patterns or concerns that may warrant further medical review

  • Clear recommendations for follow-up where clinically indicated

Consolidated reporting for your WHS records

Your business receives:

  • Confidential individual results and attendance records for each worker

  • A summary report for WHS record-keeping and audit purposes, including attendance, overall findings and suggested follow-up actions

If you have preferred report formats or internal WHS templates, we can usually align our reporting to suit.

Flexible On-Site Testing Schedules

We structure testing days around your operations to minimise disruption.

A typical mobile testing program might include:

  • One or more days per week of on-site testing

  • Capacity for up to around 20 workers per day (depending on site and scheduling)

  • Testing hours between 10:00am and 4:00pm, with short breaks as required

From there, we work backwards from your staff numbers and rostering to design a schedule that fits your operational constraints – whether you’re running a single site or multiple locations.

Room and Site Requirements

Accurate audiometric testing doesn’t always require a full soundproof booth, but we do need an appropriate room.

At each site, we require:

  • A quiet, private room away from excessive noise (e.g. machinery, loading docks, busy corridors)

  • A standard power outlet, plus a table/desk and two chairs

  • Reasonable access to staff according to a pre-arranged schedule

Where possible, we like to conduct a brief site visit before the first testing day to confirm that your chosen rooms are suitable from both an acoustic and practical perspective.

Digital Booking, Attendance and Administration

We know internal WHS and HR teams are busy, so we handle as much of the administration as possible.

Our process typically includes:

  1. Staff list
You provide a list of attendees at least one week before testing, including full name, date of birth and contact details (per site).

  2. Staff communications
We can help draft staff information explaining why testing is being done, what to expect, and how to prepare.

  3. On-the-day management
Our team manages digital check-in, consent, testing and documentation.

  4. Reporting back to you
    You receive:

    • Individual results suitable for internal HR/WHS files

    • A clear summary report outlining attendance, key findings and recommended next steps

All information is managed securely and in line with privacy and health record requirements.

Managing Ear Wax and Non-Testable Ears

It is common for a small proportion of workers to present with ears that cannot safely or accurately be tested on the day, most often due to impacted wax or an acute ear condition.

In these cases:

  • We will not complete the audiogram on the day, as results would be unreliable

  • The worker is advised to seek ear wax removal or appropriate medical care

  • With your agreement, we can:

    • Provide information about wax removal options (including our microsuction services at The Audiology Place in Forestville)

    • Arrange follow-up testing either on site at a later date or at our clinic once the issue has been resolved

We recommend allowing for a small percentage of staff to require re-testing due to temporary ear conditions outside your control.

Fees and Commercial Terms

Because every workplace program is slightly different (staff numbers, sites, schedule and travel), we usually provide a tailored quote.

In general, our pricing:

  • It is based on a per-person fee for each Clause 58 audiometric assessment, including on-site attendance, otoscopy, full hearing test, individual records and management of attendance

  • Includes project set-up and reporting, such as pre-site visits, scheduling support via our digital system, and consolidated reporting for your WHS files

  • Is subject to a minimum daily fee per testing day to cover on-site capacity, even if fewer workers attend than originally scheduled

Audiology assessments are typically GST-free medical services under Australian law; we can confirm this in your specific quote.

If you already have a budget or staff numbers in mind, we can usually give you an estimated program cost quickly.

Dr Signe Steers Audiologist
Welcome to my clinic. With nearly 20 years of experience, I have dedicated my career to enhancing the hearing health of individuals across all stages of life, from infants to the elderly. My passion for Speech and Hearing Science was sparked early on, driven by the understanding that improved hearing significantly enhances education, behaviour, and overall well-being. My career has taken me from presenting research at the World Health Organization to working in rural communities in the Philippines, where I helped developed systems that improved health and educational outcomes for disadvantaged populations. Last year I completed a Doctorate in Audiology at A.T. Still University in Arizona. Dr Signe Steers (Peitersen) holds a Bachelor of Speech and Hearing science from Macquarie University, Sydney, A Masters in Clinical Audiology from Macquarie University Sydney, and a Doctor of Audiology from A.T. Still University Arizona. Signe is a full member of Audiology Australia and Independent Audiologists Australia.
