Hearing Tests

For each adult hearing assessment, we allow up to 90 minutes, to ensure we have time to perform a comprehensive case history and examination of the ear. We will also check the status of the middle ear, speech discrimination abilities in both quiet and noise, and a diagnostic evaluation of the hearing ability. If required, we will continue on to discussing hearing solution options. The Audiology Place is a completely independent and local practice that does not have ties to any specific hearing aid manufacturer/brand. This ensures that any advise and option given, is patient-centred and individual to the specific person’s best interests. Results Once the hearing test is complete, your audiologist will present you with a thorough explanation of your test results, with plenty time for you to ask questions and gain a full understanding of your hearing loss and how it relates to the problems you are experiencing. You can take a copy of your test results home with you on the day, and a full and detailed report can be sent to your GP or specialist.

1Do I need a GP referral for an adult hearing test?

No. You can book directly and no referral is required. A referral only matters in specific cases, such as where it enables a Medicare rebate or where an ENT has asked for the results. If you're not sure whether one is worth getting for your situation, ask our team and we'll tell you.

2How long does an adult hearing test take?

Allow 60 to 90 minutes. That covers a detailed history, an ear health check, the diagnostic testing itself, and time to talk through what the results mean and what to do next. The unhurried appointment is part of why we pick up things a short screening misses.

3What's the difference between this and a free hearing check at a chain?

A free check at a retail chain is usually a brief screening designed to sort people into hearing aid candidates. A diagnostic assessment finds out what's actually happening: the type and degree of any hearing loss, whether it originates in the outer, middle or inner ear, and how well you follow speech in noise. Because we're independent and not owned by a manufacturer, the result isn't tied to selling you a device.

4What happens during the test, and does it hurt?

Nothing in the assessment is painful and none of it is invasive. We look in your ears, run a painless pressure test of the eardrum, play tones through headphones and a small headband, and check how well you follow speech, including speech in background noise. Where it's useful we add extended high-frequency testing and otoacoustic emissions to detect early inner-ear changes.

5How should I prepare for my appointment?

You don't need to do anything special. Bring a list of any medications, and your current hearing aids if you wear them. If a partner or family member notices your hearing more than you do, bring them along, because their observations are genuinely useful. Don't try to clear wax beforehand. We would rather see your ears as they are.

6What if the test shows I need hearing aids?

We fit all major brands independently, so the recommendation follows your hearing and lifestyle rather than a supplier deal. Every fitting is tuned to your prescription using Real Ear Measurement, a verification step many clinics skip. There's no sales target and no pressure, and you're free to take your results elsewhere if you prefer.
