Independent testing, including published measurements from HearAdvisor and Dr Cliff Olson, has shown a significant speech-in-noise advantage for the Sphere Infinio when its dedicated AI noise management features are active. These results have reported an improvement of around 3–4 dB signal-to-noise ratio compared with some competing premium devices, including the Widex Allure in comparable test conditions.
In practical terms, a few decibels of signal-to-noise improvement can matter. It may be the difference between catching fragments of a conversation and being able to follow much more of what is being said in a noisy room.
The Sphere Infinio uses Phonak’s DEEPSONIC deep neural network chip, which is separate from the hearing aid’s main processor. This system has been trained to identify speech and reduce non-speech background noise in real time. The goal is to make speech clearer when there are competing sounds around you.
In clinic, this type of technology can be especially useful for people who report difficulty in places such as:

Where Widex Allure Performs Well
The Widex Allure is not trying to solve the same problem in the same way. Its strength is not maximum speech separation in heavy background noise. Its strength is natural sound quality.
Widex has long been known for sound quality, particularly among people who dislike the sensation of heavily processed hearing aids. The Allure uses Widex’s W1 chip and includes its PureSound pathway, which is designed to deliver a very fast, low-delay listening experience.
For some patients, especially those with milder hearing losses, this can feel more natural and less intrusive than more aggressive processing systems.
The Widex Allure may be a good option for people who:
- Have a mild or mild-to-moderate hearing loss
- Spend a lot of time in quiet or moderately noisy environments
- Are sensitive to sharp, tinny, or artificial sound
- Care strongly about music quality
- Have previously rejected hearing aids because they sounded too processed
- Want amplification that feels more open and less noticeable
This is a real clinical benefit. Some people do not need the most aggressive noise reduction available. They need a hearing aid they will actually wear comfortably for most of the day.
The Clinical Trade-Off: Clarity vs Naturalness
The key difference between these two hearing aids is the trade-off between speech clarity in noise and natural sound quality.
The Phonak Sphere Infinio uses more active sound processing to separate speech from background noise. For many people, this is helpful. However, some patients may describe this style of processing as sharper, more noticeable, or less natural at first.
Most people adapt, but not everyone loves the sound immediately. That is why proper fitting, counselling, and follow-up appointments matter.
The Widex Allure generally offers a more natural listening experience. However, that naturalness comes with a limitation. In very noisy environments, it may not provide the same level of speech-in-noise improvement as the Phonak Sphere Infinio.
This is why choosing a hearing aid based only on how it sounds in a quiet consulting room can be misleading. The real world is not quiet. It includes clinking plates, air conditioning, overlapping conversations, traffic, background music, and children talking over one another.
A hearing aid that sounds beautiful in a quiet room may not be the best choice if your main frustration is following conversation in background noise.
How We Compare Hearing Aids in Clinic

We may use speech testing such as QuickSIN and word recognition testing to understand how your hearing performs in different conditions. A person who scores well in quiet but drops significantly in noise may benefit from a hearing aid with stronger speech-in-noise processing.
We also use Real Ear Measurement, or REM, as standard. REM allows us to verify that the hearing aids are delivering the right amount of amplification for your hearing loss inside your ear canal. This is an important part of evidence-based hearing aid fitting.
Without verification, even an excellent hearing aid can be under-fitted, over-fitted, or poorly matched to the person wearing it.
When We Might Recommend Phonak Sphere Infinio
The Phonak Sphere Infinio may be the better option if your main concern is speech understanding in challenging noise.
It is particularly worth considering if:
- You struggle in restaurants, cafés, and group conversations
- You have a moderate or greater hearing loss
- You hear reasonably well in quiet but lose clarity in noise
- You want stronger help separating speech from background sound
- You are often in active, social, or noisy environments
For these patients, the Sphere Infinio’s AI-based noise processing can offer a meaningful advantage.
It may not be the right fit for everyone, though. Some people are more sensitive to processed sound, especially when moving from older or simpler hearing aids. That is why trialling the device and fine-tuning it properly is important.
When We Might Recommend Widex Allure
The Widex Allure may be the better option if your hearing loss is milder and your priority is natural sound quality.
It is particularly worth considering if:
- You have a mild or mild-to-moderate hearing loss
- You spend more time in quiet or controlled environments
- You are sensitive to artificial or sharp sound
- You are a musician or music is especially important to you
- You have disliked the sound of previous hearing aids
- You want a less processed listening experience
For the right person, the Allure can feel very comfortable and natural. But it is important to be realistic. If your biggest complaint is conversation in noisy places, the Allure may not provide the same level of support as the Phonak Sphere Infinio.
So, Which Hearing Aid Should You Choose?
If your primary problem is understanding speech in background noise, especially in restaurants, shopping centres, family gatherings, or busy social situations, the Phonak Sphere Infinio is likely to be the stronger evidence-based option.
If you have a milder hearing loss, place a high value on natural sound, listen to a lot of music, or have previously found hearing aids too sharp or artificial, the Widex Allure may be worth trialling.
The worst way to choose a hearing aid is by brand loyalty, advertising claims, or a quick impression in a quiet room. Hearing aids should be matched to your hearing test results, your real-world listening needs, and your tolerance for different types of sound processing.
