Phonak Hearing Aids

Phonak is one of the largest hearing aid makers in the world, owned by the Swiss group Sonova, and its Audéo range is among the most widely fitted receiver-in-canal devices in Australia. The brand's reputation rests mostly on one thing: understanding speech when there is noise competing with it. That is the hardest problem in hearing aid design, and it is where Phonak has put its research money for the better part of a decade.

The EON platform is Phonak's newest range, launched in August 2026 and rolling out in Australia from September. It takes over from Infinio Ultra at the top of the line. Three receiver-in-canal models make it up: the Audéo EON Sphere, which carries a dedicated AI processor (the HYPERSONIC chip) built to pull a talker's voice out of background noise; the Audéo EON R, which runs the same platform without that second chip at a lower price; and CROS EON, for people with usable hearing on one side only. Phonak has made the Sphere model around 25 per cent smaller and a fifth lighter than the previous generation, with battery life quoted at up to 38 hours and support for Auracast and Bluetooth LE Audio. One thing to keep in mind before you read the launch material: the headline claim that wearers are twice as likely to understand every word traces back to a 2024 study on the earlier platform, measured against the same feature switched off, and several of the launch comparisons come from Phonak's own in-house research rather than independent testing. EON is genuinely new hardware and looks strong on the specifications. Independent field results will take a few months to arrive.

Infinio and Infinio Sphere remain a sensible choice, and now that EON has launched they often represent better value. The Audéo Sphere Infinio (2024) was the first Phonak aid with a separate AI chip for speech in noise, and it ranked first for that task in HearAdvisor's independent prescription testing. If your priority is difficult listening environments and you would rather not pay the premium for the newest shell, a well-fitted Infinio Sphere will serve you for years.

Lumity is the previous flagship, still current and still capable. It runs Phonak's AutoSense operating system and suits people whose listening demands are more everyday than extreme. It is also the platform behind Costco's Kirkland Signature aids, which is a fair thing to know when you are comparing prices.

For losses that need more power, Naída is the behind-the-ear range built for severe to profound hearing loss, and Virto is the custom in-the-ear option for people who want something discreet, moulded to the shape of the ear canal. Every Phonak device sold here sits on the TGA's register of therapeutic goods, which is the Australian approval that counts rather than the FDA clearance you will see quoted on American sites.
