Ear Wax Removal for Kids: A Parent’s Guide to Safe and Stress-Free Appointments

January 1, 2025

If your little one is constantly tugging at their ears, saying “What?” more often than usual, or struggling to concentrate, it might be more than just a phase – it could be earwax.

Earwax build-up is very common in children, especially those who wear hearing aids, use earphones regularly, or have narrow ear canals. And while it might be tempting to reach for a cotton bud, please don’t. Children’s ears are delicate, and home remedies can do more harm than good.

At The Audiology Place in Forestville, we specialise in earwax removal for kids. We use safe, gentle methods designed to keep your child calm and comfortable and give you peace of mind.

How Do I Know If My Child Has a Wax Problem?

Kids don’t always have the words to explain what’s bothering them. Here are some signs your child might have impacted earwax:

  • Muffled hearing or needing the TV turned up
  • Complaints of “blocked” ears or ear pain
  • Difficulty concentrating or listening at school
  • Tugging at the ears
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing noises)
  • Hearing aid feedback or reduced clarity

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having their ears checked. A quick, non-invasive look with a video otoscope can tell us immediately if wax is the culprit.

What’s the Safest Way to Remove Earwax in Children?

At The Audiology Place, we use microsuction, which is the safest and most effective method for removing earwax in children and adults. It’s a gentle suction process, and unlike syringing, it doesn’t involve flushing water into the ear.

This is especially important for children with a history of ear infections, grommets, or sensitive ears. Because we can see inside the ear during the procedure, there’s no guesswork, just safe, controlled, and precise cleaning.

Is My Child Too Young for Ear Wax Removal?

We regularly see children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. Micro suction is completely suitable as long as your child can stay reasonably still for a few minutes. We take a slower approach for very young children or those with sensory sensitivities, using calm explanations, breaks if needed, and distraction techniques to make it a positive experience.

Many parents tell us their child is fascinated by the process, especially when they see their ear on the screen!

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

To make the procedure more comfortable, we recommend softening the wax in the days before the visit. For children, a few drops of olive oil or a spray like CleanEars (which we often recommend) can make a big difference.

If your child wears hearing aids, please bring them along so we can check and clean them if needed after the wax removal.
